So, with a little trepidation, I have completed arrangements to engage in a house swap this summer. The brother of a friend of mine will be shacking up with his wife and four children in our suburban home north of Toronto as we jet-off to make ourselves comfortable in his house wedged between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in Modi’in, Israel.

I must confess to some butterflies over this transaction. Going 3.5 weeks without my X-Box is enough to send me into rehab but knowing that a gaggle of young boys will be romping through my basement within easy range of my 70″ TV has me waking up regularly in a cold sweat.

While I have never engaged in a house swap of any kind, this transaction holds a host of advantages for both couples. The family moving into our home has swapped with other families in my neighbourhood every year for 3 straight years now so they are a known entity with entirely solid ‘swapping’ references (more than they can say for my family of four).

I can also state unequivocally that spending nearly a month in Israel would be impossible were it not for the massive financial savings that come from a house swap. In addition to avoiding a nightly rack rate at some Israeli hotel, we will have access to my host’s car, health club membership and Internet access. Despite my trepidation, it was a deal that was too good to pass up.

Anyone out there have stories (fairytale or horror) to share about their house swap experience? Drop me a comment on this post.

Just got back from a house swap to Orlando, FL. I never thought I could afford to take my family to Disney for Christmas. It was fantastic, my kids thought they were in heaven!

Thanks for sharing the positive house swap experience Gregory. I’m curious to hear how you connected with the family in Orlando? Was this someone you knew before the swap? Use a website to connect you? Check references?

This has been really interesting but how do I bookmark this? I tried Digg but do I have to sign up first?

House Swap (and Home House Swap):

To promote a link on Digg you do have to sign up and register (once only and it’s free). You can always use one of the other social networking icons to promote the post on Facebook or Twitter for example or feel free to just copy the permalink URL from this post and re-post it on your site.

I’m glad you found it interesting. Check back in July and August as I’ll be blogging from Israel about many things including how the house swap is going.

Now that I’ve returned from a very enjoyable house swap experience, you may want to read about how it went.

My full length Israel column is posted here at http://thecrimetraveller.com/?p=297
